Busy Signal

Cell phones shouldn't be banned! However students should not text or play games on them!

A lot of students go on their phones during class
For many students social media is addictive. This is due to the fact that when people go on social media they get a jolt of dopamine. Dopamine is the feel-good chemical that is produced when you get a hug.  When Herring Cove Junior High temporarily banned cell phones a cell phone expert predicted that "For the students, it's going to be like trying to detox a drug addict,".

Reason for the ban
Unfortunately teachers have good reasons for wanting to ban phones. One of these reasons is that students sometimes go on their phones when they should be learning.  Which is obviously not very good. In a British study marks rose 6% after phones were banned! Students with the worst marks showed the most improvement, researchers stated that "Less distraction played a big role.". Another reason is that social media eliminates 90% of face to face conversation.

My opinion
In my opinion students should be able to use cell phones in school but they also have a responsibility to learn and not become distracted. As the Currents 4 Kids article Busy Signal states “Students are focusing more on learning, instead of who’s texting them or sending a Snapchat. But there’s more chatter as well,”. I think that this means that if phones were banned then students would be less distracted and learn more but they would also talk a lot during class. Phones could actually be used to assist students in learning! For example taking pictures of assignments so as to remember what to do. Another example is that students could use their phones to record the due dates of homework. If they did this then there would most likely be a smaller amount of overdue assignments! However students should not text or play games on their phones during class. The time that they spend in school should be used to learn, the time spent out of school can be used to play games and text, because if students did not spend any of the time in school learning then their lives would be a lot more difficult once they graduated. I am not the only one who thinks this! The Toronto District School Board has banned cell phone use in classrooms and hallways. Students there are only allowed to use their cell phones in class if the teacher allows it. I don't know about whether this will help students learn but there will most likely be less distraction.

Conclusion
In conclusion I believe that cell phones in schools can be positive or negative depending on how they are used. Some people think that they should be banned but as long as they are used responsibly they can become beneficial for students instead of being disruptive. As found in the temporary cell phone ban mentioned in busy signal a compromise must be made between students and teachers in order for a successful cell phone policy in schools.

  3. Niamh:You add did added info from the article and i like the parts you added but you could add your opinion did you think it was a good reason they banned phones or do you think it was over rated. you could put in different punctuation instead of periods. I didn't see a link so did you refer to a other article? Did you have a reason you increased the size of the letter in you opinion if it was to help see it better you should increase the hole thing. You should re-read because some of the words don't sound like the fit.
